Saltbush Court
On Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie

Saltbush Court is a restaurant first and a casino room second

The main floor at Saltbush Court in Kalgoorlie before the tables fill

You'll find four tables running most evenings — euchre, five hundred, crib and rummy, with canasta, bridge and friendly poker with no buy-in on rotation. Nothing here happens online: no app, no wagering, no cash prizes, and not a poker machine in sight. Chips mark points only, dealt out by house staff, and the whole room sits in person just off Hannan Street.

The court

The Exchange Court Behind Hannan Street

One rule holds the room together before any cards are dealt: nobody plays for cash. You arrive, you take a seat, and the chips in front of you are worth nothing beyond the game itself — that's the whole arrangement, and it hasn't changed since the court was roofed over.

You're sitting in what was once a produce and stock exchange court just off Hannan Street, weighing out stores for the goldfields before camel trains carried them out to the mining leases. An assay office stood two doors down, a saddler traded across the street, and the yard behind the stores was left to saltbush — nothing else would grow in the dust, which is where the name comes from. Most of those neighbours are gone, but a bakery and a hardware supplier still trade either side of the court today.

Our kitchen

What the exchange kitchen's cooking

The kitchen at Saltbush Court runs independently of the tables — a short menu, cooked fresh in the old goldfields exchange.

For dinner: lentil soup, then braised lamb shanks.

For dessert, a slice of pumpkin scone loaf. A dinner-only table is a separate booking from the cards.

Life Inside the Court

What are your actual opening hours?

Wednesday to Monday, 5 pm to midnight, with the felt running to 1 am on Friday and Saturday. Closed Tuesdays.

Is the room ever properly quiet?

Monday and Wednesday evenings are the quietest — good nights if you'd rather hear yourself think.

How many tables are actually running at once?

Four, most evenings — two more open up in the second room when the main floor fills.

Who deals if a table's short a player?

The house dealer always deals; if a table's short, staff will usually find you a fourth rather than leave a seat empty.

House rules

Six Things Everyone Agrees To

  1. You must be 18 or over, and you'll be asked for ID at the door.
  2. Chips are handed to you by the house and mark points only — never bought, sold or cashed in.
  3. Every hand you play happens in person, at the table — there's no online version of anything here.
  4. A house dealer runs your game; you never deal or bank a hand yourself.
  5. Seats go to whoever arrives first; call ahead if there are more than four of you.
  6. Staff can end a hand, or ask you to leave, entirely at their own discretion.

A Smaller Casino Room for Slower Hands

Through an archway off the main floor, you'll find a second, smaller room with two tables, kept for the slower games.

Bridge and canasta mostly settle in here, away from the noise of a packed main floor — the same house dealer covers both rooms, moving between tables as hands finish.
